6:14 AM

32° North, SUBATHU,
Himachal Pradesh.

An old cantonment town the highways forgot. Ninety minutes above Chandigarh, the pines close in, the phone signal thins, and the road narrows to the width of a good decision. We consider all of this a feature.

The house sits on a ridge facing east. Bougainvillea climbs the verandah wall it arrived before we did, and stays because it belongs here.

The blossom that named the house

THE MOSTintimate retreatIN THE HILLS.

We keep the house small by design small enough that breakfast has no checkout time, dinner has no second seating, and the person who picks your vegetables also asks how you slept. The hills are generous. We just choose not to dilute them.

Take a single room, or the whole house. Either way, you are the only guest we are thinking of. Every morning is the first morning.

A colonial bungalow half-hidden in mist and pine forest at Subathu

Subathu

A hill town that
never learned to
hurry.

One of the oldest cantonments in the Himalayan foothills, colonial bungalows, a church from 1846, and pine forests that have outlasted every empire that walked through them. The town does not know what a weekend is.

Getting here

Close enough to reach.
Far enough to disappear.

Subathu sits beyond the obvious hill-station circuit. The last stretch is the point: traffic thins out, the road narrows, and the hills take over.

We've stayed at many properties in the hills. Nothing comes close. The quiet here is a different kind the kind you have to stop hurrying to hear. By the second morning we'd forgotten what we were supposed to be doing back in Delhi.

The breakfast alone is worth the drive. Everything on the plate came from ten steps away, and you can feel it. The room faces east we woke before six every morning without trying. I haven't done that in years.

I came to write and instead just sat and looked at the hills for three days. The hosts understand instinctively when to appear and when to disappear. That is an underrated art. The property is exceptional but it's really the care that stays with you.

Subathu at 6 AM in November fog in the valley, bougainvillea against the white wall, tea that tastes like something remembered. I'm not sure I can go back to regular hotel stays after this. The bar has moved.
